Comparing ourselves to others is, unfortunately, something that's been ingrained in us (or me, at least) since an early age. "She's got better toys than me, he gets better grades, she has nicer clothes, he drives a newer car..." Better, nicer, newer, etc.
As you pursue your endeavors in life, there's always going to be someone whose been doing it for longer and does it better than you. But what sets you apart is that you're doing it your way. Does anyone else write their novels out longhand at their kitchen table with their calico cat snoring softly besides them? Has anyone else ever climbed to the top of Mt. Harkness and spent hours talking about birding with the volunteer stationed at the fire lookout tower? These are just a couple of the things that make me unique and I'm sure you've got a long list of your own.
No matter how much I compare myself to others, there will always be something to set me apart.
I don't have to be the "best" or the most popular or even the most successful. In fact, I can't think of a time when I've ever been any of those things! All I have to do is like me for me, enjoy what I'm doing and live the kind of life that makes me proud.
Appreciate those who have gone before you and paved the way, but also look forward to all that you'll add with your own brand of uniqueness and talent.
Sure, a little competition is healthy, but don't spend your free time obsessing over what others have that you don't. You've got stuff going for you, too. A willingness to be open-minded, to learn new things, an eye for color, a fierce determination you didn't always realize you had... Whatever it may be, you've got your own point of view, your own take on things, and the ability to see things from a different perspective.
Don't let that niggling self-doubt hold you back! You do you. Embrace those speedbumps because they mean that you're learning/changing/improving on all the wonderfullness that is you.
There you go! I knew you could do it!
Here's to setting aside the negativity and living your life your way...
